A little history
The energy label was created by a European directive in 1992 to provide consumers with more information on the energy performance of household appliances, and to force manufacturers to produce more energy-efficient appliances. Today, this label has helped to anchor a new, more responsible form of consumption among consumers.
Did you know?
A refrigerator made in the 1990s consumed 75% more energy than a similar product made in 2020.
New features
The new label will feature 7 energy consumption classes on a scale from A to G. Forget Class A+, A++ or A+++! Energy consumption requirements have been revised upwards by the European Commission, to encourage manufacturers to develop ever more efficient and environmentally-friendly products.
As a result, all product energy classes have plummeted, from A++ in 2020 to C in 2021. Not an easy task, but don't be surprised if the majority of models are rated below B. The first A and B classes are therefore the new target for all wine cellar manufacturers!
The QR code : a great novelty! Located in the top right-hand corner of the label, it gives you access to the ERPEL database. A veritable mine of information on your products. The aim is the same: ever greater transparency!
In addition to the sound level expressed in decibels, already present on the current label, a new feature has been added: thesound perception class indicator, rated from A to D.
Rest assured: the number of bottles of wine that can be stored in the wine cellar will still be displayed.
Which products are concerned?
All domestic and professional refrigeration appliances:
- Dishwashers
- Washing machines and dryers
- Refrigerators, freezers and wine cellars
- Light fittings
- Televisions and electronic displays
When does it start?
The new energy label must be displayed on all relevant appliances from March1, 2021. However, there is a transition period from November1, 2020 to March1, 2021. When you make your next purchase, you're likely to find either the new label or both labels in the packaging of your new product.
What does it look like?
Yes, even wine cellars are entitled to a new label! You'll find the QR code, sound level categories, annual energy consumption and the number of standard wine bottles that can be stored.
